Stop politicising beer fest cancellation, threats against nation are real: Liow

KUALA LUMPUR: Stop politicising the Better Beer Festival's cancellation as the decision was made due to security concerns.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said in the past, threats against the nation was not as severe as now, especially in the wake of militants and terrorists attacks.

"Groups like Daesh or Islamic State were not this real but now the whole region is on the lookout for security threats. That's our main concern," he said after officiating the Federal Territory MCA meeting in SJKC Wangsa Maju, today.

He said it is very irresponsible of certain quarters to politicise MCA's stand for supporting the ban imposed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for the fest, as it posed security threats.

"I've already cleared the air, I hope. My conscience and my principles are clear. MCA will always defend our rights based on the constitution when it involves to politics and religious matters," he said replying to a question by DAP member who questioned MCA's stand for siding with DBKL on the matter.

It was reported that police had received intelligence of a possible attack at the event. The event organiser had applied for a permit from DBKL on Aug 28 but the application was rejected.
