Father watches helplessly as lorry runs over son

KEPALA BATAS: A father watched in horror as his three-year-old son was run over by a lorry at Jalan Penaga here, today.

Roslan Ismail, 44, said the incident occurred as he was parking his motorcycle by the roadside near a sundry shop.

“We had just arrived at the sundry shop to buy some equipment for my grass cutting machine.

“I got off the motorcycle and was about to pick up my son, Muhammad Amar Danish, who was sitting in my motorcycle’s basket.

“Suddenly, a lorry knocked down my motorcycle, causing me and my son to fall.

“My son, who fell onto to the road, was then run over and dragged by the lorry's rear tyre,” said the grief-stricken father today when met at the Kepala Batas mortuary, where Amar’s body was sent for a post-mortem.

The father of seven said he initially refused to take his fifth child to the sundry shop, but his son insisted on following him.

He said his son, who suffered serious head injuries, died on the spot.

“I cannot believe that I lost my son.”

Roslan said Amar will be buried at the Permatang Tok Gelam Muslim burial ground here.

Meanwhile, Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the lorry, which was travelling from Bakar Kapor, had knocked into the right side of Roslan’s motorcycle.

“The grass cutting machine, which was in the motorcycle’s basket, got stuck to the lorry, causing the vehicle to drag the victim,” he said.

The case, he said, will be investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving.
