Penang gov't to host Operasi Lalang ISA Detention forum, Dr M not attending

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will be hosting a forum and a short movie screening on "Operasi Lalang ISA Detention" next Saturday on the 30th anniversary of the incident.

However, it is understood that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not be attending the event.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said during a press conference Friday that an invitation has been extended to Dr Mahathir but the former premier will be unable to make it to the event.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Operasi Lalang detention and we will be hosting, with Penang Institute, the forum and the screening.

“The forum will be focusing on the existence of regressive laws in Malaysia,” Lim added.

The event will be held at Eastern & Oriental Hotel on Oct 28 from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Attendance is restricted by registration to 500 only either via online or at the Penang Institute office.

The infamous 1987 Ops Lalang saw some political figures arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA). They included Lim Kit Siang, the late Karpal Singh and even Guan Eng.

It was alleged that Dr Mahathir, the prime minister and home minister then, was responsible for the operation.
