Party leaders in unity govt not exempted from police probes - Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: Holding a leadership position in the government does not exempt political party leaders from police questioning, says DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

He said that even senior leaders like DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang had previously been called in for police questioning.

Despite this, Loke said DAP had not raised any objections when the police took such action against Lim.

"Lim Kit Siang has also been questioned by the police. We didn't raise any objections. It does not mean that being in the government, party members cannot be questioned by the police," said Loke in a press conference after distributing gift packs to passengers of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Electric Train Service (ETS) at KL Sentral here today.

Accompanying him was his deputy, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.

Loke said this when asked to comment about the possibility of a dispute between parties in the unity government following the police investigation into Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh earlier today.

Akmal has since been released after giving his statement in a session lasting more than two hours.

He was summoned in relation to a police report filed against him under the Sedition Act concerning a lecture video in Kelantan.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed Akmal's questioning, expressing relief that the latter is in good condition and cooperating fully with the police.

Umno has mobilised its legal adviser Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun to assist Akmal following his detention earlier today at the Kota Kinabalu police district headquarters.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that investigations are underway against Akmal.
