Police detain 13 in illegal racing clampdown in Serdang

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen people were detained under Ops Samseng Jalanan near the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) toll in Serdang early this morning.

Two of those nabbed tested positive for drugs.

A total of 300 motorcycles were checked and 247 summonses were issued for various offenses, including possessing no riding license, expired road tax, expired riding license and modified exhaust.

The six-hour operation, which began at midnight, was conducted by the Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department, and led by deputy director Superintendent Mustafa Bakri Salleh.

Mustafa said the operation was carried out to curtail illegal racing activities, especially ones involving teenagers.

"To eradicate rempit activities totally is difficult, but we can at least try to handle the problem by running regular operations every weekend.

"These operations are not only limited to the Klang Valley, but also involve other areas identified as hotspots for illegal racing rallies,” he told reporters after the operation ended.

Ops Samseng Jalanan was assisted by 21 police officers and representatives of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the North-South Expressway (Plus) concession.

All those arrested, and their seized motorcycles, were taken to the Serdang District Police Headquarters for further action.
