Chant demands MBPP explains status of development at Jalan Batu Gantung; another landslide risk

GEORGE TOWN: The Citizens Awareness Chant Group (Chant) has expressed concerns over another possible landslide, this time at another a development near a slope in Jalan Batu Gantung.

Chant advisor Yan Lee had claimed that the sloped has been cleared but it remains uncovered and exposed to the elements, putting the site at risk of a possible landslide.

Lee said they have received numerous complaints from residents in the area who are living in fear after Saturday’s landslide at a Tanjung Bungah construction site, which claimed the lives of 11 workers, including a local site supervisor.

As such, Yan urged the Penang government, particularly the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), to explain the status of the project near the slope, and whether it is being carried out according to guidelines and strictly monitored.

“From the naked eyes, we see that the slope has been cleared into high terraces. With it being exposed, it is not impossible that a landslide will strike anytime.

“We are worried about what will happen as there construction works happening nearby,” he told newsmen today, showing them the exposed slope.

Lee said, from what he was told, the slope sits on a private land, and is being developed into a mixed development project, which includes luxury units.

He said the project was approved in February 2015.

However, after receiving complaints from surrounding residents, the MBPP issued a warning letter on Oct 14 last year.

“It has been a year after the warning letter was issued by the MBPP and we find that works are still ongoing. This raises questions how the project is allowed to proceed.

“As such, we have recently sent to memorandum to the MBPP on the status of the project, but we have yet to get any response,” he added.
