No significant soil movement following landslide at Jalan Wawasan: Serdang police chief

SERDANG: There has been no significant soil movement detected at Jalan Wawasan 3/9 and 3/14 in Puchong, here after a landslide struck the area last Saturday.

Serdang District police chief Assistant Commissioner A Anbalagan said the minor movement reported yesterday could be due to soil displacement resulting from the ongoing sheet piling works.

However, he said there are concerns about soil movement if heavy rain occurs.

"Based on the Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG), The vibrations from the sheet piling might have contributed to the collapse of loose soil yesterday at 3.30pm.

"As of today, there doesn't seem to be any significant soil movement, except for some water pooling underneath.

"We are concerned about potential movements, especially if there is rain," he told reporters after visiting the landslide area.

Water pooling occurs in areas where the land is comparatively steep. Water gathers from underground and accumulates in the affected area.

This occurs due to improper or impaired plumbing.

"Behind the landslide area, there is a monsoon drain that used to serve as a water passage. However, due to it being blocked by the soil and other materials, ponding may occur.

"Therefore, JMG and JKR will assess the situation and make recommendations to divert this monsoon drain elsewhere to ensure it flows directly to the river, just like the previous water passage."

Anbalagan said the electricity was cut by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to facilitate the installation of the sheet piling.

This is due to an electrical pole that fell and hindered the spot for the iron pile.

"TNB removed the pole and had to cut the wires as well as lower them to ensure it did not hinder the sheet piling process.

"There have been only six additional iron piles today, and when the conditions are safe, they will continue their work.

"The completion of the sheet piling, mentioned by the contractor requires two weeks and is also dependent on weather conditions. Right now, we are at 52 of 375 iron piles," he said.

On Saturday, the landslide incident was reported to have occurred at about 7.30pm due to nearly two hours of continuous heavy rain between 5.45pm and 7.30pm.

Nine houses were affected by the landslide, including structural damages.

Earlier, a spokesperson from the Subang Jaya City Council said discussions would be held with other agencies such as JKR and JMG.

He said meetings, discussions, and presentations on the case will be held to gather information before releasing the final design for slope strengthening.
