NSTP plant in Prai not spared from floods

BUTTERWORTH: Heavy rain, strong winds and floods which struck Penang since yesterday’s noon has also not spared the New Straits Times Press Bhd (NSTP) printing plant here.

Plant manager Y. Cham Nan said he was informed that the water level began to rise to 0.4m at about 9pm, affecting the main route into the plant.

“The nearby drainage facility could not accommodate the large quantity of water.

“However, the printing operation of more than 80,000 copies of all three newspapers under NSTP, namely Berita Harian, Harian Metro and New Straits Times was not affected.”

Meanwhile, checks at the printing plant at 12.30pm today saw the stagnant floodwater at the entrance has yet to subside.

A continuous downpour lasting 17 hours and heavy winds since 12.30pm yesterday has paralysed Georgetown and Seberang Prai, in addition to triggering landslides and uprooting trees, as well as creating unusually heavy traffic due to impassable roads.

It also has resulted in three deaths, including two elderly, and the evacuation of over 2,000 people.

The Meteorological Department last night has issued a red alert for heavy rain and strong winds in Penang, as well as areas of Yan, Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu in Kedah which are expected to continue until today.
