MPI to host digital news training seminars

CYBERJAYA: Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) will organise more digital news training sessions next year.

MPI chief executive officer Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya said the training was to equip journalists with writing skills for the new media.

“Journalism has gone through a major transformation where news are now being delivered online, thanks to new technology.

“It is important to train journalists, especially the young ones, as news must be accurate, factual and reliable.

“The content of the news is still the same, it is only the platform that has changed, which is from physical to virtual. Hence, we want to train newsmen to be competent in writing online news,” he said after the handing over of office keys at a ceremony at Cyberjaya Lodge Resort.

Earlier, MPI received the office keys from Emkay Group for its new two-unit office in Radius Business Park here.

MPI will begin operation at its new office in January next year, where one unit is designed as a training centre while the other will be used as a secretariat office.

Chamil said the training centre would be furnished with modern equipment.

“We will provide the necessary tools to teach newsmen online news reporting and video production.

“We normally organise workshops in hotels. But if we can’t find a hotel, then we will use the training centre in our office,” he said, adding that MPI organised on average 20 programmes annually.

Emkay Group executive director Datuk Fazwinna Mustapha Kamal said it was a big milestone for MPI to have its own building and the company was looking forward to collaborating with MPI.
