Colloquium to find anti-flood solutions

KUALA LUMPUR : A colloquium will be held in January to find flood mitigation solutions for the country.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said local and foreign experts as well as officers from the Irrigation and Drainage Department would be invited.

“We will think of ways to address the overall problem. Of course, there is no one formula that fits all.

“Penang will need its own formula, so will Kelantan and Terengganu.

“Sabah and Sarawak will also need their own formula,” he said in a press conference at Sekolah Persendirian Chong Hwa on Wednesday.

Wan Junaidi said the colloquium would seek solutions to overcome soil erosion in coastal areas.

He also announced that the government has approved a request by Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (Duke) to rent a plot of Federal land to be used as parking space for the school staff and Villa Angsana residents.

He said the open space measuring 24,520.82m and located below the highway could accommodate 400 cars.

“We hope this will help ease traffic congestion in the area, especially during peak hours, as well ensure the safety and comfort of the teachers, students and parents,” he said.

Wan Junaidi said the ministry had also received a request from the school and parents to allow the use of an empty plot of Federal land located next to their building.

He said the school planned to build a sports complex for students.

Stating that sports is just as important as academic studies, Wan Junaidi said he would present the request to the cabinet in January.

Sekolah Persendirian Chong Hwa has more than 5,000 students and 290 teachers and staff members.
