Flood relief centres in Johor close as weather improves

JOHOR BARU: Only one flood relief centre in Kota Tinggi remains open after three other centres in Johor Baru were closed as evacuees began to return home.

State Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said four people from two families are still seeking shelter at the Kampung Lepau Balai Raya in Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.

He said another three relief centres in the Johor Baru district were closed since Thursday after flood waters began to subside.

“The relief centre in SK Batu 10 was closed at 8am today, while another relief centre in Kampung Sungai Tiram Balai Raya was closed at 8.30am today,” said Ayub.

A third relief centre at the Kampung Paya Kenangan Balai Raya, Johor Baru was closed earlier on Thursday night.

Heavy downpour in many parts of Johor Baru forced 18 evacuees to be relocated to SK Batu 10 on Thursday.

Yesterday, another 20 people from four families were evacuated from their homes in Kampung Sungai Tiram Balai Raya after their homes were inundated with flood water.

Ayub said the Civil Defence Force, police, village heads, Pengerang Local Authority, Welfare Department and other agencies are still monitoring the weather and flood situation.

“Despite the closure of relief centre, the agencies will continue to monitor the affected areas.”
