Bullying in schools still occurs, says Deputy Minister

KUALA LUMPUR : The Education Ministry is aware that cases of bullying among students still happen in schools, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Deputy Education Minister II Senator Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the ministry would address this through prevention, empowerment of the law, intervention and collaborative efforts.

He said schools had been given reminders on ways to address the issue by holding various awareness programmes and student personality-building clubs such as the peer-counsellors club.

"The authorities have formed disiciplinary committees to carry out investigations, suggest punishments and steps for intervention by school administration.

"Counsellors have been given skills to address stress among students and carry out personality test, as well as identifying students who are prone to violence and bullying.

"All teachers are also disciplinary teachers, and there are pamphlets on ways to tackle bullying problem.

"There is also a module to create loving teachers and families to develop a school-loving culture," he said in response to Datuk Mohd Zaim Abu Hasan (BN-Parit)

Zaim had asked the ministry to explain ministry’s efforts to counter bullying cases in primary and secondary schools nationwide.

He had also asked Chong about the ministry's plans to address psychological bullying through the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS).

Chong said the ministry continuously carried out programmes with the private sector, non-governmental organisations and government agencies including the armed forces and police under NBOS to address the issue.
