Water discharging from Timah Tasoh Dam reduces water level

PADANG BESAR: Water discharging from Timah Tasoh Dam will be continued until the man-made lake hits its normal level.

Perlis Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Ir Abdul Najib Abdullah said the move to discharge water from the dam had helped to lower its water level from 29.67 metre yesterday to 29.41 metre today.

"We have managed to reduce the dam's water level to slightly below its normal level of 29.5 metre by discharging the excess water," he said.

It was reported that the department had to release excess water from the dam after its water level exceeded the normal level due to the current rainy spell.

This had resulted in flash floods yesterday at Kampung Padang Malau and Kampung Padang Malau Dalam near the dam.

Meanwhile checks today showed that the flood situation in the area was improving.

However, all 16 people from six families who are taking shelter at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Beseri would only be allowed to return home after the situation becomes normal.

Kampung Padang Malau villager Lisa Mastura Abidin, 33, said the flash flood was not as bad as before and the residents could still ply the access road into the village.

She added that the paddy fields in the village were also not as badly affected as during previous flash floods.
