TUMPAT: Red Crescent Malaysia is playing a major role in raising awareness in east coast states on the importance of keeping children away from floodwaters during the ongoing monsoon season.
The association’s adviser, Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Zahrah Syed Ahmad, said she believes that Red Crescent members can share experiences and information with parents at flood relief centres on the increased risk of child drownings during floods.
"Besides advising parents to prevent their children from playing in floodwaters, Red Crescent members can also teach children to keep clean (and stay safe during the floods).
"Red Crescent members can do their job well, with all the experiences they have. Their high spirit of helping others and cooperation with others really impressed me,” she said.
Speaking to reporters after visiting flood victims at SK Kelaboran here on Sunday, Sharifah, who is also secretary-general of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, said she is satisfied with the cooperation between all agencies under the Ministry in dealing with flood evacuees.
"The victims at the relief centres in the state are well treated. All their needs are met, including on food supplies and other necessities.
"My officers and I also visited those stranded by the flood. We wanted to assure them that they will receive government assistance in due course.
"It has been the government's hope that all flood victims are comfortable while staying at relief centres," Sharifah added.
