Woman who allegedly abandoned newborn has been arrested

BALING: The woman who allegedly abandoned a baby boy she gave birth to at a fuel station restroom here on Saturday, has surrendered herself to the police yesterday afternoon.

The 39-year-old woman from Johor had arrived at the district police headquarters here at 3pm, after learning that the baby “had been handed to the police”.

In an earlier report, the woman had placed the newborn into one of the station workers’ care, before leaving in a car which was parked nearby. It was also reported that the baby had been placed under the temporary care of state Welfare Department.

District police chief Superintendent Shariffuddin Yusuf said the woman claimed she did not abandon the baby but instead had returned to the station to fetch it.

“The woman claimed she had stopped at the fuel station to use the restroom after taking her father to Kupang.

“After she gave birth to the baby, she handed it to a female worker and told her that she would return to make an ‘arrangement for the child’,” Shariffuddin said in a statement.

Shariffuddin said the woman had also admitted that she was impregnated by her boyfriend, who is also from Johor.

She also told the police that her family was not aware of her pregnancy.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for the abandonment of a child under twelve years by parent or guardian.
