Sabah govt wants high-speed internet at more tourism areas

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government wants Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) to add more network ports for its high-speed internet service, UniFi, at main tourism attractions in Sabah.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the hotspots include Kundasang and Ranau, which are popular highland destinations.

High-speed internet, he said, would help tourism operators promote the destinations online.

“We have to keep abreast of technology, which is fast evolving. People now make online bookings instead of relying on walk-ins.

“As such, all service industry-related entrepreneurs in the state should capitalise on this,” he said.

Masidi was speaking to the press after launching the TM Point Sabah Open Day and UniFi edu and e-biz packages here.

State Telekom general manager Sukkuriya Walid responded positively to the call, and said they plan to do so. He said at present, UniFi services have been expanded to users in Pulau Mabul and Pulau Bum-Bum in Semporna.

They have also met and spoken to the Ranau district officer on the possibility of linking several areas in the district with UniFi but it is still at the discussion stage.

“As of now, about 100,000 ports have been installed for high-speed broadband statewide, and TM of course plans to introduce more,” he said.
