Number of Kota Belud flood victims surge overnight to more than 1,000

KOTA BELUD: Flood victims in the district here have increased to more than 1,000 people compared to 409 people as of 8pm yesterday.

The Fire and Rescue Department, in a statement, said 1,829 people from 758 families have been affected by the floods since Monday.

The victims from 26 villages are seeking shelter at the Dewan Masyarakat Tun Said, Dewan SMK Taun Gusi 2, Dewan SK Pekan and Dewan SM Agama Tun Said.

Despite rain having ceased since 1am, the water level at Sungai Tempasuk is nevertheless at the 'warning' stage while Sungai Abai is still marked at the 'dangerous' level.

There have been no new evacuations since 7am but the department said Dewan Kompleks Sukan Butong is being prepared as shelter for possibly more flood evacuees.
