Flash floods hit Keningau, 10 homes swept away

KENINGAU: Ten houses here were swept by flash floods this afternoon.

District Fire and Rescue Department, in a statement, said they received distress call about 3.30pm that Kampung Contoh, Kampung Pampang and Kampung Limbawan were inundated by floodwaters.

It is understood that homes in Kampung Pampang had collapsed and were swept away by the strong currents.

"There was no casualty as the residents had escaped earlier."

Floodwaters also entered several houses at Kampung Contoh and the department also had to ensure that no one was trapped at Kampung Limbawan.

Eight personnel were despatched to three villages.

On Boxing Day in 1996, more than 200 people who lived along the banks of Sungai Pampang here were killed and at least 70 unaccounted for when tropical storm Greg struck the west coast and interiors of Sabah.

Houses were also swept away by strong currents then.

Heavy rain with strong wind in the state is expected until Wednesday.

Meanwhile in Kota Belud, as of 8pm, 108 people have been evacuated to a temporary relief centre.
