8-year-old struck by car at Melaka school, dragged for 15 metres

JASIN: A Year Two student of Sekolah Kebangsaan Air Baruk here is in critical condition after he was struck by a car in his school compound and dragged for 15 meters under the vehicle.

The pupil, identified as 8-year-old Mohammad Faris Zakwan Zainuddin, was rushed to the Melaka Hospital for treatment. He is currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The incident occurred at about 6.50am on Thursday when the boy was run down by a Proton Iswara driven by the school’s 62-year-old general worker as he arrived at the school and was manoeuvring towards the parking lot.

It is understood that he did not realise he had hit the boy.

"The man was driving into the school compound where he hit the boy unknowingly, and dragged him for 15 metres.

"He only realised that he had hit the boy after he parked his car.

"A school teacher who was nearby heard the sound of the boy groaning in pain from under the car and immediately ran to free him," Jasin district police chief deputy superintendent Arshad Abu said when contacted.

The case is investigated under Section 43 (1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
