Baby dies after being suffocated by swaddle

KUALA LUMPUR: A four-month-old baby died after suffocating by a baby swaddle while she was asleep at a house in Sungai Besi today.

When the parents realised that the infant was unconscious, they rushed her to the Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital in Cheras at 7.30am.

Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Ghani Mohamad Ji said the doctor at the hospital had attempted to resuscitate the baby for 15 minutes but there was no response.

“The infant was pronounced dead,” he said.

Police had recorded a statement from the doctor, in which it was stated that the baby died from sudden infant death syndrome. The baby was swaddled, and was sleeping on the same bed with her parents.

She was believed to have passed out after the swaddle covered her face, suffocating her.

Checks on the toddler’s body also revealed that there was no physical abuse, and there were no criminal elements involved.
