KOTA KINABALU: World Wide Fund for Nature-Malaysia (WWF-Malaysia) has worked tirelessly to raise awareness among the public on the endangered animals in Sabah.
For the past two years, the conservation trust held several programmes at various locations in Sabah.
Among them was the Orangutan Awareness Week at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in November 2016.
“In October 2016, WWF held a joint exhibition on poaching with the Marine Programme at the Borneo Eco Film Festival.
“Another exhibition on wildlife conservation was held at the (annual) Heart of Borneo Conference,” said the non-governmental organisation yesterday.
Last year in August, WWF-Malaysia held its inaugural Sabah Elephant Film Festival in conjunction with World Elephant Day.
“The public had the opportunity to enjoy seven free screening of elephant films from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Africa.
“The festival also featured talks by conservation experts from the Sabah Wildlife Department and various other conservation organisations.”
To shed light on illegal wildlife trade, WWF-Malaysia released a video on its YouTube channel featuring some of the wildlife caught on the Sabah Terrestrial Conservation Project’s camera traps over the years. This video was released in conjunction with World Wildlife Day on March 3 last year.
This year, WWF-Malaysia produced bilingual wildlife trade brochures to be distributed at airport exhibitions to discourage tourists from buying wildlife products.
