10 divorce cases filed in Terengganu Syariah Court daily

KUALA TERENGGANU: An average of 10 divorce cases are filed daily in the State Syariah Court, of which five or six are due to Whatsapp chatting and social media problems.

State Communication, Multimedia and Special Duties committee chairman Ghazali Taib said the couples were under 30-years-old and some of them had been married for only a year.

"One of the common reasons is that couples blame each other for spending too much time on their handphones.

“We try our best to save their marriage by referring them to councilors under the Religious Department for counselling sessions and we have saved three or four marriages,” he told reporters today after visiting the house of ex-Bernama stringer Ibrahim Abu Bakar who suffered health problems.

Ghazali said he had suggested that the Religious Department reviews the module of the marriage course as it was important to ensure that couples understand their responsibilities before getting married.

“We should support them (the couple) to start a new chapter of their life with new responsibilities,” he said.

Ghazali, accompanied by several Kelab Wartawan Media Terengganu members visited Ibrahim’s house in Kampung Ladang here and handed over a basket of essential items to cheer Ibrahim and his family.

Ibrahim Abu Bakar, 75, a stringer with Bernama Kuala Terengganu since 1973, has been covering sports and news for the agency. Ibrahim left the agency in January last year following health problems.

“I am touched with the effort made by the media to visit Ibrahim as he is a veteran journalist who should be remembered for his service with Bernama, “ Ghazali said.
