Police remind public not to comment on court cases

SHAH ALAM: Police today reminded the public to refrain from making any comment on legal cases to prevent social media users from committing contempt of court.

Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said a legal case may constitute subjudice, which falls under contempt of court, and such statements could also interfere with public order.

He also advised the public not to act beyond the limits of the law and not take law into their own hands.

“In fact, such action could only put themselves in danger,” he said in a statement today while commenting on an old video that had resurfaced and was making its rounds on social media.

Mazlan said police had detected the video featuring Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association (PPIM) special action unit director Muhamad Yusof Azmi.

“In the video, Yusof was making a statement citing that the police had been instructed by certain parties to arrest him.

“This is a recycled video that had previously gone viral (on social media). It was pertaining to Yusof and PPIM unit chief, Ali Salimin.”

The duo, he said, were alleged to have taken matters into their own hands and had trespassed and caused mischief at a private vehicle storage site near Hulu Langat last year.

They had been offered bail at RM5,000 each and the case was still pending in court, he said.

“The video has been shared again with a specific agenda to cause anger among the public.

“Police actions are in line with the law and have got nothing to do with any form of pressure or instruction from any party,” he added.
