Immediate investigation into the death of a student struck by blade from a grass mower

ALOR STAR: The Education Minister wants an immediate probe into the death of a 14-year-old girl who died when a blade from a grass mower tractor struck her head this morning.

Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry was deeply saddened over the incident.

Mahdzir added that he had also asked for a full report why maintenance work on the field was carried out at the same time as the school's sports day.

“Let us wait for the report…the investigation will be completed soon, maybe in the next couple of days.

“This incident could have been avoided. I also expressed by deepest condolences to the family of the student,” he said when met today.

He was commenting on the death of 14-year-old Nur Afini Roslan, who died when a blade from a grass mower tractor struck her head this morning.

The student of Sekolah Menengah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, died on the spot in the 10.30am incident, which happened at the school field.

It was reported that two other students - Abdullah Hazlan, 14, and Mohd Farhan Reza Badrol Hesam, 13, - sustained minor injuries.

Mahdzir said, any cleaning and maintenance work should be carried out with extra precaution to avoid untoward incidents.

“If there are students on the field or any activity, then there should be no work using machinery at the same time.

“The contractor in charge should also be more alert before carrying out their work,” he said.
