Seremban to be declared a city in January 2019: MB

SEREMBAN: Seremban district is set to be declared a city in January next year, in conjunction with the 71st birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

Its Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the establishment of the Seremban City Council (MBS), will however be made earlier in the second week of April this year.

“We will be organising the pre-launch of the declaration by setting up MBS, to enable the merger process of Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) and Nilai Municipal Council (MPN) to run smoothly.

“The MBS enactment is expected to be tabled in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) after the 14th General Election," he said after chairing the Exco meeting at Wisma Negeri here today.

Mohamad said MBS should have enough time to streamline administrative matters including the restructuring of MPN and MPS staff, before the official announcement of Seremban as a city, next January.

Meanwhile, he assured that there would be no increase in assessment rates, including assessment tax, as well as rates for all licences despite the change in the MPN and MPS status.

Also, the menteri besar said he was looking forward to empower the hawker industry in the state by introducing a number of specialty food vendor centres to attract tourists.

"We are planning to build a systematic food vendor centre that offers a variety of unique dishes like the ones in Singapore, Australia and France.

"We may create such centres in every new development area, thus avoiding hawkers from doing business in the streets and causing other problems." he said.
