20-year-old proves 'keratoconus' eye disease no obstacle to excelling in studies

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Despite suffering from ‘keratoconus’ which causes distorted vision, Mohamad Amir Sukardi proved it was no obstacle for him to excel in his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination last year.

The 20-year-old was all smiles when his results were publicly announced when he went to SMK Penanti to collect them today.

He scored 3As and 1C, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.42.

Amir’s restricted vision meant he had to read the exam papers at a distance of two inches.

“Unlike my friends, I do not have the liberty to look at things clearly. I have to hold the books and exam papers very close to me to see.

“Although I have been suffering from this disease for two years, I accepted it as fate.

"I always tell myself that it should not be an obstacle for me to do well in my studies,” he said when met today.

He obtained A- in General Studies and Malay Studies, Business Studies (A) and a C+ for Economics.

Meanwhile, a total of 28 candidates obtained 4.0 CGPA in last year’s STPM examination.

Some 1,936 students sat for the exam.

State Education Department deputy director Mohd Jamil Mohamed said 16 schools also scored 100 per cent passes, and SMJK Jit Sin emerged the best school.
