10 policemen nabbed on suspicion of robbing foreigner in Setapak

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten policemen were arrested after they were suspected of robbing a group of foreigners during an operation in a residential area in Air Panas, Setapak, last Friday.

In the 8.30pm incident, a team from the Crime Prevention and Community Safety division was said to have checked on several homes suspected occupied by foreigners at Lorong 1, Jalan Air Panas, Setapak.

During the inspection, the team checked on a 62-year-old construction worker and his foreign wife at one of the units. They then moved on to the next house after the couple produced their identification card and passport, respectively.

At the next unit however, a man and an Indonesian woman who did not possess any valid travel documents were arrested.

The duo then sought the help of their construction worker neighbour.

It is understood that the foreigners manage to strike a deal with the policemen.

The team would release the second couple for RM2,000.

The construction worker then went back to his home to get the money. He emptied RM2,000 and some jewellery from the pockets of one of his pants. He also retrieved another RM2,900, which he had hid in a cupboard. He left his valuables on the bed and returned with RM2,000 to ‘pay’ the policemen as agreed.

After receiving the money, the team left the scene in a white van bearing a police logo and a blue lorry.

However, when the construction worker returned home, he found that his RM2,900, 10 gold rings, two gold necklaces, and a pair of earrings on his bed, has disappeared.

The man then lodged a police report at the Setapak police station.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed the arrest.

“We have identified and arrested all the policemen involved in the case. Action is being taken by Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.

“The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery,” he said.
