Najib : Government wants more Indian students at public universities [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: The government is studying and finding ways on how to increase the number of places and fields of studies for Indian students at institutes of higher education in the country.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this is because the government has yet to achieve the seven per cent quota for Indians in public universities.

"I have discussed with MyNadi Foundation chairman Datuk Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai on how we can add more Indians in the public universities, including in matriculations.

"At the moment, we have yet to reach the seven per cent quota for Indians at public higher education institutions. We hope through various intervention, we will be able to achieve the target in the near future," he said in his speech at the MyNadi programme at Puspanitapuri, here today.

Malaysian Indian Blueprint has outlined several aspirations which include achieving at least seven per cent Indian enrollment in all government colleges, universities, polytechnics and other tertiary education institutions.

On another note, Najib also said he will launch a special investment scheme for Indians under the B40 (bottom 40) category on April 7.

He said 100,000 Indian households under the B40 category will have the opportunity to take part in Amanah Saham 1Malaysia and he will announce the details soon.
