Police probe woman who jumped off Penang bridge

GEORGE TOWN: Police have opened investigation papers in connection with the 28-year-old woman who jumped off the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge yesterday.

The woman is expected to be summoned to have her statement taken soon.

“It is an offence to take one’s so we will investigate this incident. My advice to the people is that they should refrain from doing so. They must find ways, spiritually or others, to resolve the problems they face,” said state police chief Datuk A Thaiveegan today.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide.

In the 11.13am incident, the 28-year-old woman was said to have parked her Toyota Avanza by the roadside at Km9.9 of the bridge before jumping off.

One of the three auxiliary policemen, constable Zaidi Salleh, 52, in charge of patrolling the bridge, risked his own life by jumping into the sea to rescue the woman.

Today, state police together with the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) handed over appreciation certificates and cash contributions to the trio to congratulate them for their bravery on acting promptly to save the woman.

Thaiveegan said that there were 44 cases of people jumping off the Penang Bridge since 2011 and four cases at the second bridge.
