Ex-journo starts campaign to encourage voters to put on traditional wear on May 9

KUALA LUMPUR: Don't know what to wear on voting day? How about putting on our traditional wear.

Former journalist Tengku Elida Bustaman has suggested this today and started a social media campaign of sort to encourage Malaysian voters to wear traditional clothes during Polling Day on May 9.

She posted the suggestion on both her Facebook and Twitter accounts.

In a tweet, using Twitter handle @mokciknab, she wrote: "Kawan2, apa kata kita kenakan pakaian tradisional pada Hari Mengundi nanti? Kebaya, baju Melayu, samfoo, saree, dhoti, badu sampit atau tandak - apa saja asalkan mampu melambangkan budaya Malaysia yang kaya pengaruh pelbagai kaum. Pasti meriah! Terhibur lah sikit PACABA.

(Friends, what if each one of us wear our traditional clothes on Voting Day? Kebaya, baju Melayu, samfoo, saree, dhoti, badu sampit or tandak - anything as long as we can show off our rich and diverse Malaysian cultures. Surely it will be very exciting! PACABA (Polling Agent/Counting Agent/Barung Agent) will surely be entertained.)

She updated her Facebook status with the same call which, as of 9pm, has received more than 200 likes and 79 shares.

Her tweet also received encouraging support from netizens, garnering 586 retweets and 416 likes.

Netizen, Oeked Maisara replied to her, saying that she is planning to wear kebaya on polling day.

"Going to wear complete set of kebaya of course." she tweeted.

Another netizen, Vijayan MP said he has already planned to wear white dhoti, light blue kurta and red scarf on election day.

Like Oeked, netizen Hanim Seymour said she was also thinking of wearing baju kebaya labuan on that day.

One excited Jay Subramaniam seems to agree, he said: "Gosh! You know what would be a statement and magical? All of us turning up in our traditional wear and votong! Wow!"
