GIFs, memes and videos on the former two-time Internal Security Act detainee went mega-viral as soon as Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced on Saturday that he would be appointed defence minister.
They overshadowed news of Anwar’s release on social networking sites.
The memes and videos poked fun at the Parti Amanah Negara president’s teddy bear-like appearance, his northern Malay dialect and his penchant for throwing microphones.
The World of Buzz’s compilation of the politician’s memes have been viewed more than 500,000 times.
The fact that he is an armed forces novice inspired many stay-at-home photoshop enthusiasts to craft memes of him in full military uniform, complete with artillery.
Deemed the “Rambo” of the opposition, Mat Sabu is famed for his public speaking skills and sense of humour. He served as a cook at the Kamunting detention centre, where more than 100 politicians, social activists and educationists were detained under the now-defunct Internal Security Act during Operasi Lalang in 1987.
