Thief who stole woman's handbag ends up in hospital after falling from third floor of building

KOTA KINABALU: A thief was hospitalised after falling from the third flood of Kompleks Api-Api downtown here when he tried to flee with a woman’s handbag this afternoon.

Following the 12.40pm incident, the suspect who has yet to be identified is being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

It was made to understand that the suspect broke into a housing unit at the fifth floor of the building, and ran off with a woman’s handbag believing it contained cash and important documents.

According to a source, the incident was witnessed by a security guard at the building who give chase and ordered the man to stop, but the suspect continued running towards the fourth floor.

“At that time, the area was surrounded by several guards, resulting to the suspect jumping onto the roof at the third floor but he slipped and fell to the ground.

“He sustained serious injuries and the guards called for an ambulance,” said the source.

Meanwhile the 24-year-old owner of the handbag did not realised her belongings were taken by the suspect as she was in her room resting at the time.

“When I could not find my handbag I went downstairs to inform the guard and check if stranger had entered the building.

“The guard told me my handbag had been found and was with the police, and that the thief was in the hospital after falling off the building,” she said when met at the scene.

Meanwhile, a team of policemen from the district police station were at the complex to conduct investigations.
