Chinese tourist drowns while snorkelling near Semporna

SEMPORNA: A Chinese tourist drowned while snorkelling off Pulau Sibuan near here on Tuesday.

The man – who has been identified as 29-year-old Li Jing from Beijing – was found unconscious by his friends at about 2pm.

"The victim was one of eight Chinese tourists in a group visiting Pulau Bohey, Mantabuan and Pulau Sibuan.

"While they were at Pulau Sibuan, the victim and a friend went swimming and snorkelling. (After) about 40 minutes… another tourist (at the location) reported that a person had drowned," said Semporna District Police Chief Supt Peter Umbuas.

He said a friend rescued Li and brought him back to the boat which had transported them to the snorkelling spot.

Two local tourists then administered CPR on Li as he was rushed to the Semporna Hospital.

"The doctor on duty at the hospital made further examinations, before pronouncing the victim dead at 3.30pm," Peter said, adding that no foul play was involved in the incident. – BERNAMA
