No need for congratulatory gifts, says Dr Siti Hasmah

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has asked the public to stop sending gifts to her and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Marina Mahathir, who relayed her mother’s message through a post on her Facebook page today, said that Dr Siti Hasmah was extremely grateful for the well-wishers’ kind thoughts, prayers and messages.

“She (Dr Siti Hasmah) has asked me to request that there be no more gifts sent because one, the rule in the Pakatan Harapan government is that no politician is allowed to receive any gifts other than flowers or food, and two, as modest as the gifts might be, they do take up a lot of space.

“My parents are not moving into Sri Perdana (the Prime Minister’s official residence in Putrajaya) but instead are going to continue living at their own home. It’s comfortable but really does not have space for any more stuff,” said Marina.

Dr Siti Hasmah was responding to the stream of congratulatory flowers, food and other gifts that were sent alongside congratulatory messages to her and her husband Dr Mahathir after Pakatan Harapan won the election.

Marina said her mother sought the public’s understanding to “please not send anything to her“, even though Hari Raya was around the corner.

“Instead, she requests that you please make donations to any charity of your choice. That would please her very much,” she added.
