Karyawan proposes setting up of arts council

KUALA LUMPUR: Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia (Karyawan) today proposed that the government set up a council to oversee the development of the arts in the country.

Its president Datuk Freddie Fernandez said the proposal was put forward at a meeting of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) held here.

“We have suggested that it would be good to put all the various disciplines under one particular body, which will then be able to monitor and conduct activities to develop the industry,” he told reporters when met after the meeting.

Fernandez added that the CEP had responded positively to the proposal.

On the meeting, he said they had discussed the arts industry on an overall basis, covering theatre and all the other arts including writing and fine arts.

“The council has taken all the points raised into account and hopefully to hear from them soon,” he added.

Besides Karyawan, CEP also had a meeting with National Union of Journalists president Mohd Taufek Razak, Malaysian Newspapers Publishers Association chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hamid and National Film Development Corporation (Finas) director-general Datuk Fauzi Ayob. - Bernama
