Karak bus crash: Sister sent WhatsApp message before accident

KUALA LUMPUR: Express bus passenger Emylia Md Zaki, 35, had sent her brother a WhatsApp message informing the bus she was in appeared to have braking issues.

Mohd Azwan Md Zaki did not expect that the information received would end in tragedy with his sister being killed in a crash after the bus overturned along the Karak Highway yesterday.

In the 6.30pm incident at KM33.3 of the highway, Kuala Lumpur-bound, 10 other passengers suffered injuries while 29 escaped unhurt.

Azwan said his sister had boarded the bus with her husband Megat Laiman and their two sons Megat Mohd Azim, 11 and Megat Hakimi, 13.

"They took the bus at the Bandar Jengka bus station at about 1pm to return to Shah Alam after the Hari Raya break.

"At 4.05pm, I received a WhatsApp message from my sister, she said she was worried because the bus appeared to have braking issues," he said.

Mohd Azwan said he was shocked when he later found out that the bus had met with an accident on the highway.

"I only knew of the tragedy that had befallen my sister when I was contacted by her son, Hakimi after the accident happened. Hakimi and his brother did not suffer serious injuries," Mohd Azwan said when contacted.

Emylia and Megat Laiman's eldest son Megat Mohd Haikal, 15, however did not return to Shah Alam with his family as he lived with his grandmother in Pahang.

Meanwhile, Emylia's remains were laid to rest in Felda Sungai Tekam Utara, Jerantut, Pahang after a post-mortem was conducted at the Selayang Hospital this morning.

Mohd Azwan urged for the authorities to investigate what caused the accident and said his family hoped such a tragedy would not repeat.
