Jamal Yunos says his ability to evade police shows he is Umno Youth chief material

SUNGAI BESAR: Fugitive Umno Youth chief candidate Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos said that he will turn himself in to the police if he is elected to the post.

In a 39-second video clip sent via WhatsApp, Jamal – who is wanted in connection with nine criminal cases – said that he will cooperate with the police once he wins the election.

"Do not worry. (After) I am picked as Umno Youth chief, I will go to the police the next day.

"There is no problem. I cannot run away, although I have legs. I fled earlier because they were trying to victimise me," he said, adding that he is in “good health and still in Malaysia” despite reports to the contrary.

In the video, the Sungai Besar Umno division chief, who is clad in a green and black-striped jacket, appears against a backdrop of blue curtains.

Since his disappearance on May 25, his current whereabouts are unknown.

In a separate 44-second video clip, the wanted man – this time dressed in a blue t-shirt – insists that Umno Youth chief candidates should be “bold in the field and not just be full of talk.”

"Do not worry about getting caught, remanded and charged.

"I have had dozens of charges. No worries!

“But until now, I cannot be detected on radar.

"Only a person like this, who while hemmed in or even remanded, can get away, should be (elected) leader," he said.

Jamal was earlier listed as one of nine candidates for the Youth chief post in the June 30 Umno leadership election.

Other contenders include Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Umno Youth vice-president Khairul Azwan Harun.

Jamal disappeared while under police custody at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital almost a month ago.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed that an arrest warrant against Jamal was issued by the Ampang Magistrate's Court on June 1 under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which is “escape from lawful detention.”
