Facebook posting opens doors for jobless wheelchair-bound woman

KOTA KINABALU: Doors of opportunity have been opening for a wheelchair-bound woman since she started taking to social media to look for a job.

Last Thursday, Annasira Elias, 22, indicated on her Facebook account that she was looking for a job and included photographs of herself in a wheelchair.

The post has since gone viral.

“I received many calls from various quarters offering me jobs. I have also attended job interviews,” she told the New Straits Times.

The Keningau-born lass said she had gone for an interview for a clerk’s position and the owner of a new shop had offered her a job.

Annasira was involved in an accident in January 2015, which left her with a broken backbone.

She is enrolled in a sewing course at the People With Disability Rehabilitation and Training Complex in Kimanis, Papar.

“My condition should not be an obstacle for me to find a job,” she said.

“Whether able-bodied or disabled, if you have the desire to work you can definitely do it.

“We just need to be brave and employers also need to put their trust inpeople with disability because we do have our own capabilities.”

Since she started taking courses, Annasira said she had received a lot of support, including financial, from her family.

“I think it’s about time to repay their kindness. After all,I want to be independent and not burden others,” she said.
