Jamal in court, finally

KUALA LUMPUR: No longer a fugitive, Umno leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos arrived at the Ampang Magistrate’s court today, guarded heavily by policemen.

The Sungai Besar Umno division chief is expected to be charged with resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension.

The offence was under Section 224 of the Penal Code which carries maximum two years’ imprisonment or fine or both, upon conviction.

Clad in a black shirt, Jamal arrived at about 3.57pm. Earlier, he arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Indonesia, on board Flight MH710.

Jamal who cut a lonely figure was escorted by several policemen and could only smile to pressmen who waited as early as 2pm.

He is wanted by Malaysian authorities for several offences, including skipping bail and leaving the country using illegal means.

In May, Jamal fled police custody after failing to complete his bail process at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital.

On June 1, a warrant of arrest was issued for Jamal by the Ampang magistrate’s court for the offence of escaping or resisting police custody.

He had earlier promised to but failed to present himself to police on May 30, instead releasing a video of himself at an oil palm plantation where he claimed he was still in the country and that the arrest was an effort by certain parties to frame him.

He had also appealed to police to give him time to turn himself in but failed to do so even after a month.

Jamal had been charged with several offences recently, including creating a public nuisance by breaking several crates containing bottles of alcohol at the Selangor state secretariat building in October last year to protest the Better Beer Festival.
