Wrong-way driver causes five-car crash on MEX highway; 1 killed, 3 hurt

KUALA LUMPUR: One person was killed and three others injured when a Mazda 3, moving against traffic flow, crashed into a Proton Preve, causing a chain-reaction collision involving three other cars at Km10.7 of the MEX highway this morning.

The deceased was identified as 36-year-old private security guard, Juhan Sabturani, who was a passenger in the Preve. He succumbed to severe head injuries.

The injured were two other occupants of the Proton Preve; as well as the driver of the Mazda 3.

The three other vehicles involved in the 3.30am accident – a second Proton Preve, a Peugeot and a Proton Waja – crashed into the back of the first Preve immediately after it collided with the Mazda 3.

It is understood that the three Protons and the Peugeot were riding in a convoy to Putrajaya when the accident occurred.

“Initial investigation at the scene revealed that the Proton Preve collided with the Mazda 3, which was driving against traffic on the right lane of the highway.

“The other three cars crashed into the Preve, as they failed to stop in time,” said City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya.

He said the victims were all sent to the University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre for treatment.

Zulkefly added that all the vehicles involved in the case will be inspected by the Chemical Department and Puspakom; and that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
