Jamal Yunos gets RM400 fine for bottle-smashing stunt

SHAH ALAM: The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos to a RM400 fine after he pleaded guilty to a charge of public nuisance for smashing bottles of alcoholic drinks in front of the Selangor State Secretariat building in Shah Alam last year.

Jamal, who is also Sungai Besar Umno chief, entered his guilty plea after the charge was read out in front of Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin.

He was accused of using a hammer to smash bottles of alcoholic drinks causing disaster, danger and public nuisance. The act was committed at the building’s exit gate at 10.15am on Oct 5.

Jamal, 48, was charged under Section 290 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum fine of RM400 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Amirah Haziqah Zulkifli appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin.

Mohd Imran has earlier asked for the fine to be reduced to RM50, arguing that the act was only done as a gimmick to object to the ‘OktoberFest’ event initially scheduled to be held in Selangor.

“The reason behind the gimmick was in the best interest of the general public, even though it courted danger. In his (Jamal’s ) opinion, the effects of drinking alcohol was more dangerous than his gimmick,” he said.

Amirah, however, asked the court to mete out the appropriate punishment by taking into account Jamal’s position as a well-known individual, and for the punishment to serve as a lesson.

A number of Jamal’s supporters were also present in court, some as early as 8am, to lend their support.
