Education Ministry forms committee to study UEC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has formed a committee to study and compile data about the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

Its minister, Dr Maszlee Malik, said the committee would comprise local education experts.

“I will bring this matter to the Cabinet. The UEC issue needs to be looked at holistically and we need to take everybody’s rights into account, so they need to be given the opportunity to voice out their views,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat during the debate on the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his Royal Address.

Maszlee said this when asked by Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) regarding the UEC issue.

He said the ministry was not going to rush into recognising UEC and instead would strive to get the views of all sides.

“This is something we need to look into in detail as it is one of the things mentioned in the Pakatan Harapan (election) manifesto,” he said.

Interjecting, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (BN-Padang Terap) commented that not all the things in the PH manifesto needed to be implemented without taking into account the sensitivities of the majority.

Quoting Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Mahdzir said the manifesto was not “a Bible”.

“The manifesto is not a holy book. Not everything needs to be implemented,” he quipped.
