Selangor state assemblyman Dr Shaharuddin dies

SHAH ALAM: Seri Setia assemblyman Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin died today. He was 55. He is the third Selangor assemblyman to have passed away since the general election in May, forcing three by-elections in the state.

Shaharuddin, who was the chairman of the Selangor Islamic Affairs, Education and Human Capital Development Committee, passed away at 6.28 pm at the Putrajaya Hospital, his senior secretary Zafrullah Aris said in a statement.

The media had reported earlier that Shaharuddin, a former deputy vice-chancellor of Universiti Selangor, had been critically ill due to colon cancer and had been in intensive care.

Zafrullah said Shaharuddin’s remains would be taken to his family home in Desa Pinggiran Putra, Kajang, and the burial would be tomorrow.

Shaharuddin leaves a wife, six children and a grandchild.

Meanwhile, Borhan Aman Shah, the political secretary to the Selangor Menteri Besar, said the remains of Shaharuddin would be taken to the Kampung Limau Manis Mosque in Kajang for prayers tomorrow morning and the burial would take place at the Kampung Limau Manis Muslim Cemetery.

“I express my condolences to the family of Prof Dr Shaharuddin. I pray for the repose of his soul,” he said in a statement.

Following the media reports, Shaharuddin’s family said the assemblyman was resting after undergoing treatment and would be on leave for a month before resuming duty.

In the 14th general election on May 9, Shaharuddin, who was a PKR vice-president, secured the Seri Setia seat with a majority of 19,372 votes, beating three other candidates – from BN and PAS and an independent.

He was appointed a state executive councillor and took his oath of office on May 14.

The two other assemblymen who died were Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (Sungai Kandis) and Ng Tien Chee (Balakong).

Mat Shuhaimi, 50, died of cancer on July 2 while Ng, 40, was killed in a road accident on the Grand Saga Expressway as he drove from Kuala Lumpur to Kajang on July 20.

The by-election in Sungai Kandis is on Saturday and that in Balakong on Sept 8. --BERNAMA
