305,000 registered employers fail to make Socso contribution

KUALA LUMPUR: Only 435,000 out of the 740,000 employers registered with the Inland Revenue Board contributed to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“Malaysians must understand their responsibility and rights under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969. Every employer, even with only one employee, is responsible in registering their company and make contribution for the worker to Socso,” she told reporters at the Parliament today.

She said she wanted more employers to register their employees with Socso in upholding their rights.

Dr Wan Azizah had earlier handed Socso benefit scheme payment to Mohd Hafiz Mohd Kassim, 30, the husband of Siti Nur Iesmawida Ismail, 30, Malaysian climber who perished at the foot of Gunung Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia during the earthquake on July 29.

Also present were Human Resources Minister M. Kula Segaran, Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, as well as the victim’s parents Mazihah Mahmood and Ismail Abd Raffar.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the case of Siti Nur Iesmawida had fulfilled the criteria under the Invalidity Scheme.

“This makes the victim’s husband eligible as the recipient for survivor’s pension and funeral benefit,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hafiz said the monthly RM863 payment that he would receive under the scheme would be used for good deeds that would benefit his deceased wife.
