Rapid KL bus driver pleads guilty to drug abuse charge

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rapid KL bus driver, who bulldozed his way through traffic along Jalan Ampang and injured four people, pleaded guilty to drug abuse at the Magistrate’s court here, today.

Md Khairol Anuar Mohamad, clad in a black shirt, was calm when the charge was read to him before magistrate Noorasyikin Sahat.

He was charged with self-administration of the drug methamphetamine after he failed a drug test at the Dang Wangi police narcotics department office at 7.40pm on Aug 17.

The offence falls under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and carries a maximum jail term of two years or RM5,000 fine or both, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Amirul Asyraf Abdul Rasid offered RM7,000 with one surety.

However, Khairol’s wife, who also present during the proceedings, pleaded for minimum bail stating that she suffered from several health issues and she has to support her eight months old baby.

The court set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 24 for mention.

The 32-year-old is expected to be charge with traffic offences at the traffic court here next week.

It was reported that the bus had involved in an accident near AU2 Keramat before speeding through the traffic in Jalan Ampang, damaging seven vehicles along the way.

The incident was believed to have started after the bus rammed into a car, and subsequently a burger stall in Keramat before several men on motorcycles gave chase.

Four people were reportedly injured during the 8pm incident on Thursday.
