KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) contractors are urged to be professional and ethical, and avoid resorting to corrupt practices to get contracts.
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said the ministry would not compromise on corruption and would ensure that people were given the best service.
He said the performance of DBKL contractors was satisfactory, but there was room for improvement.
He said DBKL paid almost RM500 million to contractors every year to carry out road, lighting and tree maintenance.
“Contractors should be professional in executing work within the period of time given, without neglecting quality,” he said.
“Do not bribe because we can’t afford the best service if some of the funds are used to ‘feed’ officers.
“Stop the culture of giving commissions or kickbacks. Instead, use the money to improve the service,” he told 700 contractors at the DBKL Training Centre, here, today.
Khalid said DBKL staff had been warned against engaging in corruption and added that he was determined to get rid of the misconception that DBKL was “rich” and that if offered opportunities for corruption.
He reminded contractors to stop contracting work out to third parties.
“As stated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, if a person (contractor) gets a contract then he has to implement it. Otherwise, it will be canceled,” he added.
