Sandakan teen injured in crocodile attack recovering

SANDAKAN: A 14-year-old teenager, who was injured after being attacked by a crocodile in Hulu Sungai Seguntor 10 days ago is on the road to recovery.

Arsil Alkamal is now recuperating after receiving treatment for his injured leg. His family had previously sought help from the public when they could not bear the costs of Arsil’s medical treatment.

The boy’s grandfather Omar Abdul Halim, said that Arsil had been warded at the hospital thanks to the help of Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, Ariffin Asgali, who is Sekong assemblyman.

He said the wound on his grandson’s leg has been stiched and Arsil was expected to be discharged in a few days’ time.

“Thank you for helping my grandson. Without the help of everyone, Ardil would have needed a much longer time to recover,” said Omar, who is in his 60s, when interviewed by the New Straits Times Press (NSTP).

Arsil, who is stateless was attacked by a crocodile while swimming upstream of Sungai Seguntor in Kampung Melayu, here on Sept 10.

He however managed to escape after kicking the reptile several times before being rescued by witnesses tp the incident.

Following the attack, Omar pleaded for help from the public to assist the family as they could not afford to bear the medical treatment bill.

Omar had said that none of villagers in the area dared to swim in the river after the crocodile attack. However, he was told that the reptile has been seen twice during high-tide recently.

He said the villagers had sighted three crocodiles in the river eight months ago, and urged the authorities to catch the reptiles.
