Police, SEB cutting off power to illegal gambling premises

KUCHING: Sarawak police are working with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to cut off electricity supply to premises found to be sites of illegal activities, particularly, illegal gambling.

In a statement, Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief senior Assistant Commander Dennis Leong said the cooperation is part of police’s ongoing operation to stamp out illegal gambling activities throughout the state.

“Our joint-operation with SEB will continue and we will not hesitate to cut off power to any premises (immediately, which are) used for illegal businesses, especially illegal 4-D and online gambling.

“With the electricity supply severed by SEB, we are confident that the illegal activities will be crippled,” he said.

He also called upon members of the public to come forward and provide information on any illegal gambling activity in their area.

Leong said the power cuts by SEB are made under Section 21A (1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

He also said that police raided 12 premises at the Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre, Hui Sing and Matang on Wednesday, and their electricity supply was disconnected by a team from SEB.

A total of nine women and two men, aged between 19 and 32, were nabbed and ten mobile phones and cash amounting to RM893 were seized.

Those arrested are being investigated under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

“Police will continue to monitor the premises which had their power cut,” he added.
