Gobind Singh to meet telcos soon over newly-announced broadband packages

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said today he will meet telco representatives soon over the newly-announced broadband packages to ensure they benefit subscribers.

He said he scrutinised the new packages stated in the statement of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) yesterday and discovered that the subscriptions of existing clients had not been reduced.

“This means they cannot benefit from the new packages immediately,” he said in a post on his Facebook account.

He said he also found out that there were no proposals to overcome problems faced by Streamyx subscribers, which he said should be tackled immediately.

The MCMC in a statement said consumers would enjoy lower fixed line broadband prices with a reduction of up to 56 per cent through the new packages announced by the four telcos, namely Telekom Malaysia, Maxis, TIME dotCom dan Celcom.

Gobind Singh said the drop in prices through the new packages was in line with the Pakatan Harapan government intention to reduce prices and increase broadband speed in the country.

He instructed MCMC to monitor the implementation of the new packages and manage all complaints to ensure that the services meet the subscribers’ expectations.

He thanked those who had provided suggestions through various platforms on how to improve the country’s broadband services.

“I will step up efforts to improve the quality of the Internet services in our country so that Malaysia is ready to embrace the new digital era known globally as Industry 4.0,” he said. – BERNAMA
