Maszlee wants to bring back era of free education TV channels [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry hopes to bring back the era of free education television channels in order to foster a brighter generation and boost the standard of educational technology.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said access to educational content should be free for all.

“We (Education Ministry) will bring this suggestion to relevant parties such as television and content providers.

“I will also discuss the matter with Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.”

He explained that during his formative years, there were many interesting educational TV programmes to learn from and be entertained.

Such TV programmes, he said were free then but nowadays require a paid subscription.

“If this proves too difficult, we have the option of creating more online television portals which can be viewed by students,” he said.

He was speaking at the National Smart Schools Awards Ceremony at the Education Ministry’s Educational Technology Department in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday.

Also present was Education (Policy and Development) deputy director-general Datuk Sulaiman Wak.

Maszlee sais it was time Malaysians highlighted more educational content, and stop viewing only vulgar or sensationalised content.

“We also acknowledge the need to create more educational content for smartphones as more and more people have their phones close to them at all times.

“Hopefully this will be completed some time next year,” he added.
